First of all, The IGLOO was an idea that was implemented after seeing a news report from Preble High School in Green Bay. Dawn Byrum inquired at Preble and asked numerous questions from D. Mark Bonetti. She received support from administration and a very generous family in the community. This family donated a sum of money to buy supplies for this room to be built by Mr. Gary Knuth’s high school Woods students. Work began in the winter of the 2009-2010 school years; however the IGLOO did not begin assisting students until the fall of 2010-2011. Work was done behind the scenes by Middle School study hall students, Ms. Byrum, various high school students, Wayne Tess and Scott Hughes throughout the 2009-2010 school years. The goal is to involve many staff members, community members, and students at all grade levels. There are so many possibilities in which everyone can become involved; an IGLOO Team needs to be created!!!
The Three Main Goals of The IGLOO
Goal #1 - School Supplies:
We like to stock the IGLOO with school supplies of all shapes and sizes – ANY school supply that might help a student become successful at Tri County School District. Examples include pencils and paper but we accept goggles for science class, student planners, calculators, protractors, glue, markers, backpacks, locker organizers, trapper keepers, flash drives and any other items that might be needed to complete school homework and projects.
Goal #2 - Personal Hygiene Products or Toiletries:
It is amazing how most of us take personal hygiene products for granted. Some families in our district struggle with low income or poverty; they could benefit from personal hygiene products. The IGLOO collects any type of personal hygiene products. Examples include: toothpaste, shampoo, tooth brushes, tampons, soap, deodorant and combs (we even get some make-up donated), and any other toiletry items. We request that these donations be NEW. Students don’t always like to admit they need these items but our IGLOO Team does a good job encouraging them to take some.
Goal #3 – Clothing (we are learning that this is a complicated part of the IGLOO).
Some items we request NEW products and not USED. Those items are underwear and socks. People ask “What can I buy that you really need?” I think the best answer is Underwear and socks for guys and girls. These new donations are great for our underprivileged students.
Welcome To The IGLOO
